Discovering Public Spaces in Athens: The AA Visiting School Semester Program

In the Autumn Semester of 2019, The AA Visiting School embarked on an exploration of possibilities within the historic district of Athens. The aim was to revitalise and introduce projects that would seamlessly align with the continuous regeneration initiatives in the area. The term 'Polis' within the historical and cultural context of Athens holds a multifaceted significance, encompassing notions of a city-state, urban hub, body of citizens, community, and the influence of public space. To delve deeper into this concept, our approach involved extensive fieldwork, allowing us to investigate the urban dimensions of the Athenian polis.

Through this process, we came to perceive the city as a complex interplay of layers, each representing different dimensions of information. These layers were instrumental in mapping out the unique conditions and qualities that formed the basis for our distinctive design narratives, contributing to a deeper understanding of Athens as a rich and multifaceted urban tapestry.

The primary focus of this project is to implement focused and targeted initiatives that regenerate neglected spaces, aiming to enhance the well-being of the neighbourhood. This will be achieved by introducing more green spaces, resting areas, and an art complex, all of which promote urban regeneration at a local level. The project aims to cater to the daily routines and needs of the local community, ultimately fostering a more vibrant and dynamic urban environment.
