YWCA of Myanmar

Yangon, Myanmar

AN ARCHITECTURE OF ABSTINENCE

Empowering Young Women: Through Faith & Architecture

Today, the YWCA Yangon is dedicated to transforming the lives of single mothers and single women, irrespective of their gender, race, or religious affiliation, by providing a safe environment for healing and empowerment. The organisation plays a vital role in assisting women in enhancing their employability skills and unlocking their full potential to realise their life aspirations. At the YWCA, women have the opportunity to pursue high school equivalency classes, improve their English proficiency, enhance their computer skills, acquire valuable trade skills, and reconnect with their interests, talents, and abilities.

The project is centred on the renovation of the YWCA Myanmar building, with the vision of transforming it into a comprehensive transition home and training centre, all within the captivating context of a Victorian-colonial architectural masterpiece. The reimagined buildings will seamlessly integrate private living quarters with recreational areas, communal living spaces, and purpose-built training and workshop facilities. These spaces are designed to introduce and inspire women to pursue further education, nurture independence, offer a safe haven, and kindle hope for a brighter future.

The design takes the form of a new linear structure ingeniously inserted behind the preserved existing facades, effectively extending over an existing garden space, and connecting with a towering standalone building adjacent to the south. This design approach harmoniously blends the historical charm of the Victorian-colonial architecture with the contemporary functionality required to cater to the diverse needs of the women it serves.
